HEIC vs PNG: Complete Comparison
HEIC compresses photos for storage; PNG preserves every pixel losslessly with full transparency. Here's how they compare and when each is the right choice.
| Feature | HEIC | PNG |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy (HEVC-based) | Lossless (DEFLATE) |
| File Size (typical photo) | ~1-2 MB | ~5-15 MB (3-10× larger) |
| Image Quality | Visually excellent (perceptually lossy) | Pixel-perfect (mathematically lossless) |
| Color Depth | 10/16-bit (wide gamut, HDR) | Up to 16-bit per channel + alpha |
| Transparency | Supported (1-bit alpha) | Full 8-bit alpha (smooth edges) |
| Best For | iPhone storage, native Apple workflows | Web graphics, screenshots, design assets, archive |
| Apple Devices | Native (iOS 11+, macOS High Sierra+) | Universal |
| Windows / Android | Codec required | Native everywhere |
| Web Browsers | Safari only (Chrome/Firefox: no) | Universal — supported since 1996 |
What is HEIC?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's implementation of the HEIF format, introduced with iOS 11 in 2017. It uses HEVC (H.265) video compression to store images at roughly half the size of a JPG with comparable visual quality. HEIC is a lossy format: the encoder discards perceptually invisible information to save bytes.
- check 50% smaller than JPG at same perceived quality
- check Supports 10/16-bit color and HDR (Dolby Vision, HLG)
- check Can store live photos, bursts, depth maps, EXIF
- remove Cannot be re-edited losslessly (each save degrades)
- remove Patent-encumbered (HEVC licensing)
What is PNG?
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) was created in 1996 as a free, patent-unencumbered replacement for GIF. Unlike HEIC and JPG, PNG uses lossless DEFLATE compression — every pixel in the saved file is mathematically identical to the original. This makes PNG the standard format for screenshots, design assets, web graphics with sharp edges, logos, and any image you plan to re-edit.
- check Pixel-perfect lossless compression — no quality loss ever
- check Full 8-bit alpha channel (smooth transparent edges)
- check Universal browser, OS, and editor support
- check Patent-free, ISO standard since 2004
- remove Larger files than HEIC or JPG (3-10× typical)
tips_and_updates When should you convert HEIC to PNG (instead of JPG)?
PNG is the right output when you cannot afford any quality loss or you need a transparent background. Choose HEIC → PNG over HEIC → JPG when:
- check_circleYou will edit the image again — every JPG re-save degrades quality (generation loss). PNG stays pixel-perfect through unlimited edits.
- check_circleYou need transparency — PNG's 8-bit alpha lets you isolate iPhone photo subjects (people, objects) on a transparent background for design work, presentations, or compositing. JPG has no transparency at all.
- check_circleThe image has sharp edges, text, or solid colors — diagrams, app screenshots, scanned documents, or photos with overlaid text suffer visible JPEG artifacts (ringing, blocking) but stay crisp in PNG.
- check_circleLong-term archival — PNG is your master copy; export JPGs from it later for sharing.
- check_circlePrint or design work — Adobe Photoshop, Figma, Sketch, and InDesign all prefer PNG for placed images that may be resized or composited.
Looking for smaller file sizes for email, social media, or general sharing? Use our HEIC to JPG converter instead — JPG output is typically 5-10× smaller than PNG.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do iPhones use HEIC instead of JPG? expand_more
iPhones use HEIC because it's a more efficient format. It saves photos at roughly half the file size of a JPG without losing image quality, which helps save storage space on your device.
Will converting HEIC to PNG reduce image quality? expand_more
If you choose a high-quality setting (90% or above), any quality loss will be virtually unnoticeable to the human eye. Our tool is optimized to preserve the original image's detail during conversion.
Does this converter preserve my photo's metadata (EXIF)? expand_more
Yes, our converter is designed to preserve important EXIF metadata, such as the date, time, and location where the photo was taken, whenever possible during the conversion to JPG.
Can I convert multiple HEIC files at once? expand_more
Absolutely. You can drag and drop a batch of HEIC files into the upload area. The tool will process them all simultaneously, and you can download them together in a single ZIP file.
What's the main difference between HEIC and JPG? expand_more
The main differences are file size and compatibility. HEIC offers a smaller file size for the same quality but is not universally supported. JPG is larger but works on virtually any device, software, or website.
phone_iphone How to Make iPhone Save Photos as JPG
If you prefer your iPhone to capture photos directly in JPG format instead of HEIC, you can change this in Settings. Here's how:
-
1
Open Settings
Go to your iPhone's Settings app
-
2
Navigate to Camera
Scroll down and tap on "Camera"
-
3
Tap Formats
Select the "Formats" option
-
4
Select "Most Compatible"
This will save photos as JPG and videos as H.264
Note: Choosing "Most Compatible" will result in larger file sizes. If storage is a concern, keep using HEIC and convert only when needed using this tool.
Choosing the Right JPG Quality
Preserves the most detail from your original HEIC. Best for printing or professional use.
File size: ~2-3x larger
Best balance of quality and file size. Visually identical to 100% for most photos.
File size: ~1.5x larger
Good quality with smaller files. Ideal for web uploads and social media sharing.
File size: Similar to HEIC
