What is ORF?

ORF (Olympus RAW Format) is Olympus's proprietary RAW image format, used in both Olympus cameras and their successor OM System (OM Digital Solutions) cameras. ORF stores unprocessed sensor data at 12 bit color depth from the Micro Four Thirds sensor, preserving full editing control over exposure, white balance, and color.

What is JPG?

JPG (JPEG) has been the standard for digital photos since 1992. Despite being over 30 years old, it remains the most widely supported image format across all devices, operating systems, browsers, and applications.

About ORF and the Olympus / OM System RAW format

ORF (Olympus RAW Format) is the proprietary RAW image format used by Olympus and its successor OM System (OM Digital Solutions, the spin-off that took over the camera business in 2021). The format runs across the entire Olympus E-system Four Thirds DSLR line (E-1, E-3, E-5), the OM-D Micro Four Thirds mirrorless family (E-M1 series, E-M5 series, E-M10 series, E-M1X), and the current OM-1, OM-1 Mark II, and OM-5 bodies. Compact RAW shooters like the STYLUS XZ-2, XZ-10, TG-6 Tough, and PEN-F all save ORF as well.

ORF stores 12-bit RAW data inside a TIFF/EP-derived container with full EXIF metadata, lens-correction profiles, art-filter parameters, and an embedded JPEG preview. Because Olympus / OM System uses the smaller Micro Four Thirds sensor (roughly 17.3×13mm vs full-frame 36×24mm), file sizes are typically smaller than equivalent-megapixel Canon or Nikon RAW files: roughly 14-22 MB on a 20-megapixel OM-D E-M1 Mark III, 20-28 MB on the 25-MP OM-1 Mark II in standard mode, and up to 50-80 MB when using the unique Hi-Res Shot mode (which composites 8 frames in-camera into a 50-megapixel pixel-shift image saved as ORF).

Olympus / OM System has long had a distinctive color science — punchier blues, slightly warmer skin tones, and stronger micro-contrast than Canon or Nikon — that draws a passionate enthusiast following. The catch: that color science is baked into Olympus's in-camera JPGs and into Olympus / OM Workspace (the official desktop RAW processor). Generic RAW processors like Lightroom, Capture One, and the in-browser converters apply a more neutral demosaic that loses some of that signature look. For street, travel, and landscape shooters who chose Micro Four Thirds specifically for the OM color, OM Workspace's "Picture Mode" matched export remains the reference.

Why convert ORF to JPG? Universal compatibility plus dramatic file-size reduction. ORF cannot be read by web browsers, social media uploaders, email clients, online print services, or photo cloud services (Google Photos, iCloud). Even within the Adobe ecosystem, ORF support requires recent Lightroom / Camera RAW versions — older installations choke on newer ORF variants. JPG drops a 22-MB ORF to a 2-4 MB share-ready file that opens everywhere, which is exactly what's needed for travel-blog uploads, Instagram and 500px posts, prints, and email attachments.

For Hi-Res Shot ORFs, the JPG export at maximum quality preserves the 50-MP pixel-shift detail in roughly 8-12 MB — small enough to upload to most photo-print services that cap at 100 MB. For everyday OM-1 / E-M1 III output, the in-browser conversion is the fastest no-install path; for color-critical commercial work, OM Workspace remains essential.

How is ORF different from JPG? expand_more
