What is NEF?
NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) is Nikon's proprietary RAW image format used in all Nikon DSLR and Z-series mirrorless cameras since the D1 (1999). It stores the complete, unprocessed sensor data at 12–14 bit color depth, giving photographers full control over exposure, white balance, and color grading in post-processing.

What is JPG?
JPG (JPEG) has been the standard for digital photos since 1992. Despite being over 30 years old, it remains the most widely supported image format across all devices, operating systems, browsers, and applications.

About NEF and Nikon's RAW format
NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) is the proprietary RAW image format used across Nikon's entire digital camera lineup since 1999. NEF has the longest continuous run of any current RAW format — the same fundamental container has carried Nikon's RAW data through 25 years of generations, from the early D1 DSLR to today's flagship Z9 mirrorless. Every Nikon DSLR (D850, D810, D750, D610, D7500, D5600, the legendary D3/D4/D5/D6 pro bodies, the D3300/D3500 entry line) writes NEF, and every Nikon Z mirrorless body (Z9, Z8, Z7 II, Z6 III, Z5, Z fc, Z50) does too.
NEF is internally a TIFF/EP container that supports both 12-bit and 14-bit RAW capture, with optional lossless compression (modern Z bodies and most D850-class DSLRs) or older lossy compression ("compressed" mode on D7000-era bodies, which throws away ~25% of the highlight data via a non-linear compression curve — generally avoided by serious shooters). File sizes vary widely: roughly 20-30 MB on a 24-MP D750 or Z6, 40-55 MB on a 45-MP Z7 II or D850, and 50-70 MB on the Z9's 45-MP sensor with full 14-bit lossless. Wedding and event photographers using continuous burst mode on a D6 or Z9 produce hundreds of NEF files per assignment, often several gigabytes per session.
One quirk worth knowing: Nikon's NEF files include a non-standard "Color Process" tag that some non-Nikon software interprets differently from Nikon's own NX Studio (formerly Capture NX). The result is that the same NEF file can render with subtly different colors in Lightroom vs Capture One vs Nikon NX Studio vs darktable. None of them is wrong — they're applying different camera-profile assumptions. For absolute color fidelity (commercial photography, fine-art reproduction, color-critical client work), Nikon NX Studio remains the reference. For everyday work, Lightroom's "Camera Standard" profile gets within 95% of Nikon's in-camera JPG colors.
Why convert NEF to JPG? Universal compatibility plus drastic size reduction. NEF is unreadable by web browsers, social media uploaders, email clients, Microsoft Office, online print services, and most cloud photo tools. A 50-MB Z7 II NEF becomes a 4-6 MB JPG that opens instantly anywhere. The tradeoff (lossy compression, baked-in white balance) is irrelevant for the use cases JPG serves: client previews, social posts, blog uploads, email attachments, web galleries, and proof prints.
For long-term archives or fine-art prints, keep the NEF originals and only export JPGs as needed. For sharing, FastlyConvert's in-browser conversion produces clean, color-accurate JPGs in seconds — no software install, no need to spin up Lightroom for a single file. The conversion preserves the embedded sRGB or Adobe RGB profile chosen in-camera and applies a tone curve close to Nikon's Standard Picture Control. For wedding/portrait shooters who need exact Nikon color science, do the final delivery exports from NX Studio or Lightroom; for everything else, the in-browser path is faster.

At 90% quality (the default), any quality loss is virtually unnoticeable to the human eye. Our converter uses professional-grade processing to preserve color accuracy and detail from the original RAW sensor data. For print-quality output, use 100%.
How is NEF different from JPG? expand_more
NEF stores raw, unprocessed sensor data at 12–14 bit depth — typically 25–50 MB per file. JPG is a compressed, processed image at 8 bits, typically 3–10 MB. NEF offers full editing flexibility (exposure, white balance, color grading) but requires specialized software. JPG opens anywhere instantly.
