What is ARW?

ARW (Sony Alpha RAW) is Sony's proprietary RAW image format used in all Sony Alpha mirrorless and DSLR cameras. Sony has used ARW since the original Alpha DSLR (2006), with multiple revisions (ARW 2.3 through ARW 4.0 for the A7R V and A1). It stores the full, unprocessed sensor data at 12–14 bit color depth.

What is JPG?

JPG (JPEG) has been the standard for digital photos since 1992. Despite being over 30 years old, it remains the most widely supported image format across all devices, operating systems, browsers, and applications.

About the ARW format and Sony's RAW workflow

ARW (Alpha RAW) is the proprietary RAW image format used by Sony's Alpha (α) line of mirrorless and DSLR cameras. The format made its debut around 2005 with the Sony α100 and has shipped on every Sony Alpha body since — including the full-frame α7, α7R, α7S, α9, and α1 series, the APS-C α6000/6400/6700 family, the cinema-focused FX bodies, and the high-end RX1R compact. ARW files are also the default RAW output of Sony's professional broadcast cameras when shooting stills.

Internally, ARW is a TIFF/EP-based container (Tagged Image File Format / Electronic Photography) that holds 14-bit linear sensor data plus full EXIF metadata, lens-correction profiles, focus points, and a JPEG preview thumbnail. Modern α7 III and α7 IV bodies record ARW at roughly 40-65 MB per frame in uncompressed mode, or 25-35 MB with Sony's lossless compression. The newer α1 and α7R V hit 50-100 MB per frame because of their 50-61 megapixel sensors. Bigger files mean more headroom in post — exposure recovery up to ±5 stops, white-balance correction without color shift, and shadow detail that simply isn't in a JPG.

Why convert ARW to JPG? Because outside of Lightroom, Capture One, and DxO PhotoLab, almost nothing reads ARW. Web browsers, social media uploaders, email clients, Microsoft Office, the iOS Photos app's "share" sheet, and most online print services either reject .ARW or display the embedded JPG preview (which is low resolution and pre-baked with default white balance). Converting to JPG produces a small, universal file that opens instantly anywhere — perfect for client previews, social sharing, blog uploads, and any workflow that doesn't need re-editing the RAW data.

FastlyConvert preserves the embedded color profile (sRGB, Adobe RGB, or DCI-P3 from Sony's wider-gamut bodies) and applies a tone-mapping curve close to Sony's in-camera JPG engine. If your workflow needs absolute color fidelity for fine-art printing, do the JPG export from Capture One or Sony's Imaging Edge desktop software. For everything else — sharing, archiving as previews, embedding in documents — this in-browser converter produces clean, accurate JPGs in seconds with no software install.

Why convert ARW files to JPG? expand_more

ARW files are typically 20–50 MB each and only open in Sony Imaging Edge, Lightroom, or Photoshop. Converting to JPG reduces the file to 3–10 MB — universally compatible for email, social media, web upload, and client delivery.

Will converting ARW to JPG reduce image quality? expand_more

At 90% quality (the default), any quality loss is virtually unnoticeable. Our converter uses professional-grade processing to preserve color accuracy and detail from the original RAW sensor data. For print output, use 100%.

How is ARW different from JPG? expand_more

ARW stores raw, unprocessed sensor data at 12–14 bit depth — typically 20–50 MB per file. JPG is compressed and processed at 8 bits, typically 3–10 MB. ARW offers full editing flexibility (exposure, white balance, color grade) but requires Sony Imaging Edge or Lightroom. JPG opens anywhere instantly.
